Course Description

Deep dive into the world of pictorial tapestry techniques! Explore different methodologies such as folk/Romanesque/billedvev in a green warbler, medieval/Renaissance techniques in an owl, and contemporary and textured techniques in a cardinal. Learn to work with finer detail and a wool warp, including bending the “grid” of tapestry with eccentric weft, working shading with hatching technique and mutli-strand Aubusson, as well as integrated textures from soumak, tufting, beading, and embroidery. This course is packed with inspiration and invitations to explore the world of forming pictures with woven threads!

Kit Details

Level 3 kit includes:

• 3 wooden tapestry bobbins
• Wooden mini batten
• Worsted wool warp
• Wool weft from our sheep
• Cotton carpet warp for headers, as well as waste weft
• Full scale cartoon
• Assorted accents for tufting technique
• Kabob sticks for warping
• Digital access to the photo essay (link comes with email receipt)
• Digital access to pre-recorded tutorials

Students will also want to provide:

• Supplies from your Level-1 and 2 kits, including loom, needles, and comb
• A sharp scissors
• Good lighting
• Needle and thread for finishing
• Tapestry needles

Learning Outcomes

By the end of class, students will be able to:

• Warp with a rigid starter and multi-step header
• Use wool warp and a tighter (10 epi) spacing
• Manage curves and rippling
• Work thick and thinner outlines, leaving space in the shapes for this outlining
• Work shading as either hatching or Aubusson
• Manage floats
• Three methods of tufting: Navajo tufting, rya knot, and feather tufting
• Add embellishments such as decorative floats, beads, and embroidery stitches
• Nuanced advanced finishing techniques and methods
