Self Study, Wool Embroidery Level 1

Wool Embroidery, Level 1

Course Description

Embroidering with wool has captivated imaginations since at least the Viking Age, offering beautiful and textured means for stitched expression.  Dive into this world and learn about its many iterations over the centuries with this immersive introductory class, while stitching your own floral piece.  During the course, students will learn 14 different stitches, how best to utilize them in a design, and good process discipline while stitching—skills and concepts that you can apply to any number of future embroidery endeavors.  Experience the fluidity of this freestyle embroidery using wool yarn from the instructor’s sheep.  Great for beginners or those with some embroidery experience who are looking to master the finer points of decorative stitching with wool.

Students must provide an 8-inch embroidery hoop, sharp thread scissors, a needle and thread for attaching bias tape to hoop, and good lighting.  Embroidery stands are optional, if desired.

Kit Details

Wool Embroidery, Level-1 kit includes:

  • Cotton fabric backing with hand-drawn design. Sewn edge prevents fraying while stitching.
  • Bias tape for wrapping inner embroidery hoop for improved grip.
  • White wool yarn from instructor’s sheep.
  • Embroidery needle.
  • Pattern chart.
  • Video tutorials
  • PDF of photo essay for additional instructions (digital download with email receipt of purchase.

Why white yarn?  Lighter colors are much easier to see when learning to stitch than dark colors, and sticking to one color of yarn for this introductory class helps students focus on learning the stitches, rather than worrying about color choices and switching colors during the project.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of class, students will be able to:

  • Prepare their embroidery hoop and stretch their backing fabric.
  • Start new threads and stop old ones.
  • Work 14 different stitches in different situations (not just sampler squares, on real shapes!)
  • Appreciate what makes wool embroidery unique from other types of embroidery.

Students are welcome to submit questions and images of their project via email to Laura for help, troubleshooting, and checkins. Stitch on!
