Our Birds: Their Features and Characteristics

red ranger chickens

Red Ranger Meat Chickens

Most farms raise the White Cornish-Cross breed, but we raise Red Rangers! These spunky, hearty, active chickens are great roasters and very tender with nice breast size, dressing out between 6 and 8 lbs. We typically raise out our Red Rangers 14+ weeks, with females taking longer than males. They enjoy the first few weeks of life in the safety of a coop before transitioning into pastured, portable pen systems known as “tractors.”  Every morning, Laura and Kara move the tractors onto fresh pasture, where the Rangers naturally forage for fresh greens and bugs.

Heritage Turkeys

Heritage Turkeys are known for their delicious flavor, smaller size and better pasturing capabilities. In the spring, Laura collects eggs from our Heritage Turkey breeder flock for incubation. The hatched chicks are raised in the brooder coop until they are strong enough to transition to the barnyard for daily foraging adventures.
These birds mature in late fall and are available for Holiday enjoyment with sizes ranging from 9-27 pounds, dressed.

Purchasing Poultry from Our Farm:

Ensures Top Quality

All our birds enjoy dynamic, outdoor lives in harmony with nature, supplemented with locally grown grains milled to our specification, free of any type of growth treatments.

Engages Stewardship

Every day, we tend our birds with compassion and respect--moving them onto fresh ground, providing them with nutritious feed and fresh water, and protecting them from predators and the elements. Our dedication to this process with heartfelt lovingkindness means our birds enjoy life, free of the terrors of factory farming.

Regenerates the Earth

The poultry on our farm are a key component of our rotational grazing practices--increasing soil fertility, reducing pests and parasites, and fostering a diverse, verdant ecosystem. Our poultry are an integral part of how we are regenerating the land on our farm, furthering our vision for a healthy planet and all its inhabitants.

We are certain you will taste the difference!

This could be in your kitchen!

After 24 years of raising poultry, we have found that ordering 6 chickens and 1 turkey is a common package that many of our members have enjoyed. All birds are processed on-farm from late July into November and will be available dressed, whole and fresh.
