Intro to Tapestry Weaving, Level 2
Course Description
For graduates of Intro to Tapestry Level-1, this course focuses on the next skill level in Laura’s curriculum. Explore learning 6 different types of vertical joins, as well as mastering all aspects of the geometric form of tapestry weaving. This includes the stepped mesa motif (all right-angles) and the Nordic star motif (angles and verticals). Learn to read a grid chart, make pattern changes, and master starting and stopping points, as well as diving into the symbols and their meaning present in geometric textiles. Additional warping and finishing techniques are also included in the course.
Kit Details
Level 2 kit includes:
- Ergonomic wood tapestry comb
- Cotton carpet warp
- Wool weft from our sheep
- Grosgrain binding ribbon for finishing
- Color grid pattern
- Digital access to the photo essay (link comes with email receipt)
- Digital access to pre-recorded tutorials
Students will also want to provide:
- Supplies from your Level-1 kit, including loom and needles
- A sharp scissors
- Good lighting
- Needle and thread for finishing
- Tapestry needles
Learning Outcomes
By the end of class, students will be able to:
- Make 6 types of joins: interlock, double interlock, Gobelin slit, turnlock, square dovetail, and pointed dovetail
- Read a grid pattern and translate this into tapestry form.
- Set up and move a patterned design in the geometric form.
- Start and stop points and diamonds.
- Sew slits.
- Make a knotted header.
